We sought the following information:
There have been cases of massive destruction of mangroves in eco-sensitive Uran area in Navi Mumbai by JNPT, NHAI, NMSEZ. What is the action taken by the Department.
Please let us know the number of cases filed, details of FIRs and further action taken.
Was there any assessment of the damage done?
What is the record of re-plantation, if any and what is the survival rate of such replanted mangroves.
Also, the PWD work on expansion of Sion-Panvel highway has led to destruction of mangroves about which no one seems to be bothered.
We request for information on the action taken.
With no response forthcoming, we went in for First Appeal which was heard by Virendra Tiwari, Additional Chief Conservator of Forests, Govt Of Maharashtra.
He advised us to move the authorities such as the High Court appointed Mangrove Protection and Conservation Committee or the Chief Conservator of Forests.
Interestingly, Tiwari subsequently took over as the CCF and head of mangrove cell and he wrote to CIDCO and Raigad and Thane district collectors to handover five wetlands to his cell for protecting them.
